Tablets

Submitted by Matthew Pettitt on Thu, 2010-01-28 12:09

If you don't know, I've been ill for a while now, and hence taking loads and loads of pills and tablets and capsules and other medicine delivery devices. And I must say, there is room for improvement with them. I think that reducing the sizes would be a good start, or perhaps making something that combines them into one handy pill thereby reducing the number of swallows required.

Anyway, that isn't the type of tablet that is all over the blogosphere at the moment. That honour goes to the iPad, which you aren't going to swallow without a really suppressed gag reflex, and, presumably, an Apple approved throat.

Googlephone: the return

Submitted by Matthew Pettitt on Tue, 2009-12-15 18:18

Since the confirmation of the existence of the Nexus One, or, as people are terming it, the Google Phone, turned up on Friday, there has been a lot of speculation about how Google plans to sell it.

Well, how about by subsidising the hardware themselves, instead of the phone company?

Ideas bouncing

Submitted by Matthew Pettitt on Tue, 2009-10-27 19:40

I got one... I am now the proud owner of a lovely HTC Hero (well, technically, since it's in black, it's a G2... Why the US one with a different case and radio module is still a Hero, while the one with a different colour case in Europe changes name is a mystery..)

Now, therefore, I'm in the phase of ownership where I notice all the niggly little things that aren't quite right with it, and which no-one seems to have written an app for yet. And, since it's a open system, write them, if at all possible!

Phone Lust

Submitted by Matthew Pettitt on Fri, 2009-09-18 21:01

My phone contract has run out, so I'm doing the annual (well, 18-monthal, I suppose, technically) search for a new shiny phone. This also coincides with the search for a new purple phone for Tessa, which can be just as tricky.

How to handle 2500+ times your expected traffic, without killing your server

Submitted by Matthew Pettitt on Wed, 2009-09-09 21:15

Today, I noticed one of the servers I run was showing some scary looking stats. In fact, it appeared to be averaging, over the previous 24 hours, 2 million hits an hour. To a specialist site, which I'd expect to get maybe 800 hits an hour.

The curious thing about this wasn't so much the number of hits, more that I hadn't noticed it until I looked at the stats on the server, despite having spent the previous 3 hours working on the server. It hadn't affected the response speed of the server at all.

The Bleurgh Ribcage

Submitted by Matthew Pettitt on Mon, 2009-08-03 17:04

The background of this website, which is also used in the site logo, is a rendering of a chaotic attractor, made using a piece of software called Chaoscope (http://www.chaoscope.org/). In this particular case, it's a variation on one of the sample projects, but with some different seeds used.

  • @philipnorton42 OK, I won't mention how it now defaults to using your online bank details to buy products advertised on the site. Yay! — 10 hours 57 min ago

  • @FionaSarah @philipnorton42 I'd have to agree about HP being bad for laptops. Know of far too many dead ones... — 22 hours 55 min ago
  • @FionaSarah No, you shouldn't get a Macbook. Macbook Pro is much better for a gaming rig - decent graphics set. — 22 hours 57 min ago
