Phone Lust
My phone contract has run out, so I'm doing the annual (well, 18-monthal, I suppose, technically) search for a new shiny phone. This also coincides with the search for a new purple phone for Tessa, which can be just as tricky.
My requirements are:
- Decent camera - 5 megapixel or better
- 3.5mm audio jack
- Loud ringtones
- Decent speaker for calls
- Ability to access net
- App support - need a ssh client, twitter client, email, ideally Audible support
- On tariff for a maximum of £35/month, ideally less
- Maximum contract length of 18 months
- Not on evil Orange, or anything that is merging with it (sorry, T-mobile)
This is pointing me to an Android based phone, just because I've had a play with the N97, and it just seemed a bit, well, clunky, and I refuse to move to Windows Mobile. Oh, and iPhone? Not at the current prices. That leaves, well, a few options from HTC, a Motorola, a Samsung, and a really ugly LG. (ref. http://crave.cnet.co.uk/cnetuk/crave/mobiles/0,39029453,49303669,00.htm )
Of these, the HTC Hero is the standout - it is a lovely phone, available on Vodafone (and Orange, and, as the G2, on T-Mobile), but reportedly a bit sluggish at times, as if the interface has been designed for a slightly more powerful device which is yet to be announced. Mind you, the latest firmware apparently helps this, which could well mean it gets even more of a lead.
The HTC Magic is ok, but I don't like the styling, and it's really the same as the Hero, but without the interface polish. It's not really much cheaper either, so I'm not sure why you'd go for it unless you prefer the rounded appearance.
The HTC Tattoo looks like an option for Tessa - you can get rather stylish purple covers for it from HTC! She's also just got into Twittering, and likes the look of it. Also will be available on Vodafone from Octoberish.
The Motorola DEXT looks like it'll be an Orange exclusive phone, which rules it out without even looking at the rest of it - it's not the nicest looking phone either, though, with a sort of rubbery Spectrum 1980's style keyboard... I was a Commodore user back then, so couldn't switch allegiance now!
The Samsung Galaxy is a weird one. It's not got any shiny polish on the interface, but default Android isn't bad, and it's got lots of onboard memory. On the other hand, it's only on O2 at the moment (although supposedly could reach other networks after the 4 week exclusivity period, which started 3rd Sept, runs out), and they want a fortune for it. There is also a shortage of reviews - it's as if Samsung haven't been sending out any review units to anyone, which makes me suspicious... Samsung, want to change my mind on this one?
Finally, there is the LG GW620. Just no. Really. It's _ugly_!
